Scam pattern

Shipping Fraud

Fake tracking numbers, manipulated documents, or missing cargo.

Risk signals

  • Tracking number doesn't appear in the carrier's official system
  • Bill of lading sent only as a low-resolution image
  • Refuses to use buyer's nominated freight forwarder

Real case example

Supplier provided a shipping document that looked legitimate. The forwarder confirmed the container number was never booked — the goods were never produced.

Warning signs

  • Tracking 'updates' come only from the supplier, never the carrier
  • Container number format doesn't match the claimed line
  • Documents arrive with subtle font inconsistencies

Prevention

  • Use your own nominated freight forwarder
  • Verify B/L and container number directly with the shipping line
  • Require original shipping documents before final payment
