Scam pattern
Shipping Fraud
Fake tracking numbers, manipulated documents, or missing cargo.
Risk signals
- Tracking number doesn't appear in the carrier's official system
- Bill of lading sent only as a low-resolution image
- Refuses to use buyer's nominated freight forwarder
Real case example
Supplier provided a shipping document that looked legitimate. The forwarder confirmed the container number was never booked — the goods were never produced.
Warning signs
- Tracking 'updates' come only from the supplier, never the carrier
- Container number format doesn't match the claimed line
- Documents arrive with subtle font inconsistencies
Prevention
- Use your own nominated freight forwarder
- Verify B/L and container number directly with the shipping line
- Require original shipping documents before final payment
